Introducing a cat to a dog: slow, step-by-step basics

Introducing a cat to a dog usually goes best slowly. Many trainers suggest separate spaces first, then scent swapping, then short supervised meetings.

Step 1: separate spaces

Give the new pet their own room for the first days. The cat should always have high places and escape routes.

Step 2: scent swapping

Swap bedding or rub a cloth on each pet and let the other sniff it. Reward calm interest.

Step 3: short, supervised meetings

Keep the dog on a leash, keep sessions short and end on a calm note. Watch for stiff bodies, staring or hissing and give more space if you see them.
