New rescue dog not eating? Start with your vet
A smaller appetite during a big change can happen, but not eating can also be a sign of a health problem. This is a question for your veterinarian.
Call your vet, especially if
- Your dog hasn't eaten for about a day, or stops drinking.
- There's vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or signs of pain.
- Your dog is a puppy, a senior or has a known health condition.
Things to tell your vet
What food the rescue used, when your dog last ate and drank, potty habits and anything unusual. Our free tracker makes this easy to note down.
Simple, low-stress habits
Many adopters keep the same food the rescue used at first, feed in a quiet spot and keep a regular schedule. Ask your vet before changing food.
