Rescue cat hiding? What's common and what helps

Many newly adopted cats hide for a while. Hiding is one way cats cope with a new place. The goal is to make hiding feel safe while giving your cat chances to come out on their own terms.

Set up a starter room

  • A small room with litter, food and water placed apart.
  • Hiding spots: a box on its side, a covered bed.
  • A scratching post and a couple of toys.

What helps

Sit quietly in the room, read or talk softly, and let your cat approach. Avoid pulling them out from under the bed. Short, calm visits often work better than long ones.

Call your vet if

Your cat isn't eating, drinking or using the litter box, or you notice any signs of illness. Not eating can be serious for cats, so don't wait it out.
